Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra)

The Whinchat is one of the typical species of the Green Belt. The ground breeders are threatened by early mowing and loss of shrubs. The male Whinchat with a stripy brown upper side, white eye stripes and an orange-beige throat needs shrubs as singing places to attract the females. During the Cold War the Whinchat partly sang from border stones or metal fences. The late mowing of the Green Belt grassland and the remaining shrubs provide ideal living conditions.
