There are several lakes along the Green Belt, housing a variety of birds, amphibians, fishes. The border situation has often prevented them from excessive nutrient inputs and uncontrolled tourism. The big glacial lake Schaalsee in Northern Germany and the steppe lake Lake Neusiedl at the border between Hungary and Austria are completely different, both being breeding and resting habitats of European importance. The smaller glacial lakes of Sumava show a beautiful scenery.
