Sustainable tourism attempts to reduce impacts on the environment and local culture, while helping to generate income and employment. It is responsible tourism which is both ecologically and culturally sensitive.
Most people enjoy natural landscapes and undertake long journeys to find them, not always respecting the natural conditions and the local population.
The Green Belt provides an extremely diverse section through European natural landscapes. People interested in culture and nature can learn about the European history and how land use in former times has formed and left traces in the landscape.
The aim of sustainable tourism along the Green Belt is to lead visitors to the treasures of the Green Belt without harming them. Thus it can contribute to the regional development of these disadvantaged regions and raise awareness for natural assets - and the need to protect them. Several exemplary projects are focusing on this issue.
