Green Belt Europe

Borders separate — Nature unites

Downloads Interreg-Project finished 2008

Steinach Valley and Linder Lowlands

In the foothills of the Thuringian Schist Mountains several rivers and ditches formed a widespread wetland area with swamps, wet grassland, white lily ponds and lowland forests up to the 1920s. The border situation preserved some of the important wetland habitats as well as heath and grassland. After the political changes the Bavarian and Thuringian branch of BUND, Friends of the Earth Germany, started the first regional Green Belt project to preserve the ecological backbone and develop the adjacent rivers, forests and grassland habitats.
