West Eastern Gate

The objective of this project, funded by 'Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU and Bingolotto, was to visualize the idea of the Green Belt as wildlife corridor and refuge, living monument and meeting point between East and West. Twelve artists were invited to take part in a seminar and to present their concepts for an open gate between Eastern and Western Germany. Today two oak trunks, connected by a metal sill, rise up to the sky. In the course of time they will be overgrown by a small forest of red oaks, representing the process of commemoration. Adjoining Green Belt plots were bought and preserved by BUND and 'Heinz-Sielmann-Stiftung'.
