Green Belt - Protection and valorisation of the longest habitat system
The Interreg-project „Green Belt“ wanted to promote an ecological network throughout Europe, that helps to protect this longest system of habitats and contributes to the implementation of NATURA 2000 and EU spatial policies.
Green Belt focused on using the natural potential of the regions for a sustainable development in these disadvantaged regions, on fostering the communication between the people once separated and on raising the awareness that nature protection can be compatible with sustainable regional development. Moreover, the enhanced transboundary cooperation - based on joint natural and cultural assets - shall and will contribute to a new regional identity.
The objectives are
The protection of the trans-national habitat-system through an analysis of gaps in the ecological network and evaluation and promotion of measures to close these gaps. Partners of the Interreg project analysed the Green Belt along the borders of Germany, Czech Rep., Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia with one standardised method, providing an overview and essential basis for future measures of nature protection.
Overall results:
- Report of the GAP-Analysis (PDF),
- short versions of the country reports (PDF)
Bulgaria as partner of the Balkan Green Belt has prepared an analysis of the border between Greece and Bulgaria, too.
The promotion of sensitive transport development in these border regions through a feasibility study and pilot projects. The study deals with public transport, bike paths, hiking trails, accessibility for all and ecotourism. It defines a list of indicators of sensitive transport solutions which will be used to valuate best practice (transborder) examples from inside as well as outside the Greenbelt. The implementation of these good solutions was tested in three example regions along the Greenbelt: a) strictly protected and well managed areas, b) protected but not as well managed areas and c) in non-protected areas with high value but low conservation status. Proposals for future steps are made and presented to decision makers.
Overall results:
- Feasibility study „Sensitive Transport Development along the Green Belt“ (PDF)
