Right after the reunification Klaus Buchin and his wife started cycling along the 1400 km of the German Green Belt and visiting interesting objects on both sides of the former border. The results of these cycling tours were published in two cycling guides.

Reiner Cornelius: Vom Todesstreifen zur Lebenslinie - Natur und Kultur am Gruenen Band Hessen-Thueringen", Niederaula 2005-2007:
Reiner Cornelius walked along several segments of the German Green Belt and researched local nature and history. Several hiking routes are described including hsitorical and natural monuments and rest stops.

2003 the journalist and author Landolf Scherzer hiked along the former inner German border in South Thuringia, visiting villages and towns on both sides. Speaking to Bavarians and Thuringians who had to live with the cutoff from relatives, the loss of homesteads, the restrictions because of border protection and today have to cope with the new economic and social conditions after the political change, a picture is drawn of the side effects of European separation and unification on the local population.
Klaffenboeck: GRENZgehen. Eine Wanderung entlang der oesterreichischen Staatsgrenze zu Tschechien, der Slowakei, Ungarn und Slowenien, Passau 1999:1997 the cabaret artist and photographer Rudolf Klaffenböck hiked 100 days along the former Iron Curtain of Austria. He met lots of people, looked for historic traces in the landscape. His impressions give an image of today's and yesterday's life in the border zone.

BUND Thuringia's project coordinator 'Green Belt' Karin Kowol worked up the experiences in preserving Green Belt in this virtual journey along Green Belt from Upper Saale region to Harz mountains. Landscapes and projects, problems and chances are described and the reader is encouraged to follow the traces of European history in the landscape.

In the years after the political change, when many investors tried to make the big money by major projects, the Association of Citizens for Sustainable Tourism fought against planned centre parks in their well-structured South Thuringian landscape and promoted the idea to attract visitors with a hiking trail along traces of earlier and recent history. They established a 'Peace Trail' with information tables along and on both sides of the former Iron Curtain. Additionally the information are printed in the guide book.
