The Iron Curtain throughout Europe prevented people from both sides from crossing the border line. It inhibited economic development not only in the area of the military constructions, but in large areas adjoining the border. Many people left the border regions or were resettled.
These very grave and inexplicable impacts on man gave nature a chance:
The area of the Iron CurtainSo habitats were preserved, that have become rare throughout Europe, e.g. coastal habitats, natural floodplains, extensive grassland and farmland, heath, fens, large natural forests and oligotrophic lakes.
The preservation of the Green Belt helps not only nature, it preserves our natural and cultural heritage and it gives us the possibility of coping with the European past.
