Transborder Forest School Project Thuringia
Since 2002 the forestry office Leutenberg and Blankenburg Secondary School have implemented several projects in the Green Belt of the Thuringian Schist Mountains. The basic idea was to 'experience forests with all senses'and to 'understand nature with heart and brains'.
Every year school classes could participate in three events:
The topic 'Green Belt' is part of the regular classes of the Blankenburg secondary school. Pupils occupy themselves with German history and regional nature.
The intention of the project is to establish a natural forest with a mosaic of different age groups and tree species and open areas.
The practical results of the project are the establishment of rare trees like mountain ash and fir, the construction enclosures to protect the young forest against game bite, preservation measures of heathland and the construction of blockhouses and charcoal piles.
