Slovenian Kras/ Italian Carso is a large area of typical Karst on calcareous and dolomitic substrate. It is representative for karst phenomena like deep dolinas, caves, seepage of rivers, karst valleys and cascades of inland cliffs. It is representative for east submediterranean dry grasslands, partly covered by forest and brushwood. Hophornbeam - oak forests are prevalent, but forests of turkey oak and common pear appear too. A network of small ponds is important for amphibians, many caves are important troglobiont habitats (e.g. the Cave Salamander) and wintering and resting places for bats. Under rocky baldahines the very restricted Thomas' Sandwort can be found. In forest regions there are beetles like Lucanus cervus. The Rock Partridge, formerly very abundant, now has became rare. The populations of the European Tree Frog, the Thomas' Sandwort and the Entire-petalled Gorse are of national importance. The Wild Cat is frequent, Black Bear and Jackal are rare. The valleys of the river Branica and its small tributaries are important for the Italian Agile Frog, the Lombardy Lamprey, the Fire-bellied Toad, the Barbel and the European Otter.
