Hanság Basin

Hanság Basin is one of the largest former peatlands in the region adjoining Lake Neusiedl/Fertö, formerly fed by the floodings of adjoining rivers. By ground water it was connected with the Danube river system. The Hanság basin has been transformed into agricultural land by draining the area with a canal system since the last century. But there are still wetlands, including wet meadows, peaty grasslands, swamp forests and open waters supporting Sand Viper, Mudminnow and Wheather Fish.
