Styrian landscape ´Jogl- und Wechselland´

The Styrian Core area 'Jogl- und Wechselland' in the foothills of the Alps is drained by the rivers Lafnitz and Feistritz. The river Lafnitz is rather natural. Until 1921 it had formed the border between Hungary and Austria for a long time, today it forms the border between Styria and Burgenland. Inspite of centuries of intensive land use the area contains a big variety of  hedges, groves and riparian trees, which are habitats e.g. for rare birds. The forests are dominated by spruce and red pine. In some parts there are beech forests as well. There are old stands of pear trees around villages and farmsteads. The stream Pinka (inflow of the Raab river) is rather natural in the upper reaches while below the traditional moline use has changed river dynamics.
