Sneznik-Pivka Karst Landscape

Sneznik-Pivka Karst Landscape and Javorniki Mountains

The region is a typical Karst area in the border triangle Slovenia/Croatia/Italy with many caves without public access, dry grassland and beech forests. The dry Karst meadows are in decrease because of the abandonment of use. In the caves there are good populations of the cave beetle Leptodirus hochenwarti. Reka River is an important corridor and habitat for the Mediterranean and Common Barble, the White-clawed Crayfish and several amphibians. Along the river there are patches of oak-hornbeam forest and calcareous dry grassland, an important feeding area for bats.
